Do you need more room in your home? The attic may be an option. Attic remodeling can give you that master suite, guest bedroom or kids playroom youve always wanted. Check with your local building code department to determine the requirements for turning attics into livable space.
Check your roofing system
The first thing to do is look at the roof rafters/trusses and the height of the space. If the rafters are in a W shape, you can forget about converting the attic. However, if they are in the shape of an A you could have a good candidate for the extra living space.
The next step is checking the height of the space for headroom. The majority of building codes require a minimum of 7 feet for more than 50% of the space. Dont forget to deduct from your measurement the thickness of the materials for thefloor of the room and drywall or paneling for the ceiling.
The final thing to consider is entry and exit ways. Again, most building codes require two exits from a living space. A window large enough for an adult to fit through might do. However, keep in mind that you would still need to get safely from the attic to the ground.
Insulate for best use
Youve determined the attic is okay to remodel and youre anxious to get started. Since this is going to be a living space, it needs to be insulated. The floor of the attic probably has insulation already. If not, check the building codes and insulate the floor first. Then install your sub-flooring. You now have a good surface from which to work. Then insulate the walls and ceiling. Be sure to insulate adequately. You know how hot and cold the attic was before!
Consider lighting
Consider adding windows and skylights to provide light during the day. The windows can also provide an exit point for emergencies. Recessed lighting for dreary days and at night is perfect for attics. This gives an appearance of the space being more open than if light fixtures are protruding from the ceiling. Strategically placed table lamps can light shadowing corners.
Add plenty of storage space
This is especially important if you stored things in your attic before remodeling. You still need storage, right? Add as much storage space as possible to your remodeling plan. If the new room is going to a bedroom or master suite, you need to include closets, as well.
Add the proper utilities
You will need to add all of the required utilities for the space. This includes heating and air-conditioning, electric, water and sewage (depending on the usage). Check the local building codes for requirements and plan ahead. Its a good idea to add extra electrical outlets for all of todays electronic gadgets.
Attic remodeling is an extensive project with numerous skills needed. Consulting a good contractor is a smart decision.
