Have you considered ways to make your home more energy efficient? You may already be recycling or riding your bike instead of driving, but green principles can also be incorporated into the design of your home. The government even wants you to get into the act by offering tax credits of up to $1500 for remodeling and renovation projects that increase your homes energy efficiency.

Buy Efficient Appliances
The Energy Star website (www.energystar.gov) has a complete list of refrigerators, furnaces, air conditioners and other appliances that are much more energy efficient than standard models. According to the site, upgrading appliances can save $75 a year on your energy bills, while helping the environment at the same time. Energy Star qualified models can use up to 50% more energy efficient than standard appliances, and you can easily recoup the extra cost over after a few years of use.

Install New Windows and Doors
There are also energy efficient windows and doors that have the Energy Star label. These are made from improved materials and feature multiple panes, special glass coatings, and gas fills, and can save hundreds of dollars a year in energy costs. There are models that qualify for the tax credit, making a home remodel or renovation that includes these products more affordable.

Insulate
Properly sealing and insulating a home to make it more energy efficient can save you up to 20% off heating and cooling costs. Attics should have at least 12 inches of R-38 insulation. Insulating and sealing ducts can provide even greater energy savings. Renovation that increases a homes insulation also qualifies for a 30% tax credit of up to $1500.

Replace Your Lights
According to the Department of Energy, lighting eats up about 15% of home energy costs, and there are many ways to make your lighting more energy efficient. Upgrading to efficient lamps, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and ceiling fans will allow you to realize even greater savings. Any home improvement or renovation project should also include the installation of photocells and sensors to automatically turn on and off lights.

Use Water Saving Devices
The average American uses over 80 gallons of water a day, and you can become more energy efficient by cutting the amount of water you use. Installing low-flow fixtures can reduce your homes water consumption by over 30%. Upgrading to an Energy Star water heater can earn you a tax credit. Tankless water heaters are even more energy efficient than traditional systems.

If these tips have convinced you that you should make your home more energy efficient, choose a good, reputable contractor to ensure the best work and a maximum return on your home remodel or renovation investment.
