There has never been a better time to use energy-saving options to renovating the home. The federal government and many states are offering rebates and tax incentives to homeowners who renovate using green designs. This includes topping up attic insulation and replacing the old, double-pane windows with the new triple-pane low-e and argon type. These increase the warmth of the home. As well, homeowners are replacing their water heaters with a solar hot water system which uses the heat from the sun to supplement their hot water needs. These systems can also be used to heat floors by hooking it into a radiant in-floor heating array.

Basement remodeling also qualifies as a green remodeling project. Many homeowners have little if no insulation in their basements and the concrete walls have never been finished. By framing the walls and putting in insulation and vapor seal the homeowner can expect to get up to and R-15 value which will cut down the heat costs considerable. Drywalling and finishing the basement can gain a bonus area which can be used as an entertainment area or home theater. This can also be accomplished with an attached garage or other spare room.
