Low water pressure can result from a variety of causes. The first step in troubleshooting is to determine if the problem is global or local. If you have low water pressure at every faucet and toilet, the problem is global. Whereas, if only one or two faucets have the low pressure condition, then the problem is local.
The Pressure Regulator
The pressure regulator is designed to reduce the pressure in your homes pipes from the citys main supply line. The pressure in the main line is usually much higher than your home fixtures can withstand. Some pressure regulators can be adjusted to increase or decrease the water pressure in the house. If it is not adjustable youll need to have a plumber replace it for you.
Elevation and How It Affects Water Pressure
This is a simple condition caused by gravity. A water supply tank needs to have a higher elevation than the homes it serves. Water cannot be compressed and therefore as the unique condition of transferring pressure horizontally, even when the water pipe is vertical. The easiest solution is to have a booster pump installed in your house by a licensed plumber.
Home Valves Where It Is and A Simple Solution
The Home Valve is located where the water pipe from the citys water main enters your home. This is usually close to where the water heater is located or one of the garden hose outlets are on your house. Make certain it is completely open. There is also a Customer valve is located outside and is controlled by the water company. If your home valve is completely open you should ask the water department to check the customer valve. Call a licensed plumber to replace your home valve.
Water Leaks
Even a small water leak will cause a reduction in pressure. If you cant see the leak or visible signs of it there is a simple way to determine if you have a leak somewhere in your pipes. Turn off all faucets and make sure the toilets arent running when they shouldnt be. When every water outlet is shutoff, write down the numbers on your water meter. Wait two hours and read it again. If the numbers are different, you have a leak. Call a licensed plumber.
Mineral Deposits
If you have an older home with steel water pipes, they may be plugged with mineral deposits. This is especially true for all horizontal pipes. The best thing to do, if you believe mineral deposits are the problem, is call a reputable and licensed plumber.
Peak Period Water Usage
You and your neighbors may share more in common than you think. Many of them may take a shower at the same time you do. Washing machines and dishwashers can be running at the same time of the day. Altering your schedule a little might help or having a booster pump installed to maintain even pressure.
