With all the home repair and remodeling shows on TV, its easy to convince yourself that you can take on that bathroom or kitchen without hiring a contractor. In reality, you should think long and hard about whether you are really have the proper skills. While there are a ton of books and magazines to help you along if you decide to do it yourself, a contractor is already way ahead of you in terms of skill and experience. State agencies have made sure that certain standards apply, and most states require a contractor to pass a lengthy exam before they can call themselves licensed.
Plan and Execute Projects
General contractors have the experience and knowledge to manage all phases of construction or remodeling. They know what permits to obtain, how to schedule work, and what subcontractors to hire. A licensed or general contractor also should be able to work with your designer or architect to make sure the work turns out just as planned.
Take on Hazardous Work
Contractors can take on jobs that require specialized skills, such as dealing with asbestos or lead paint. They are trained to safely work in places that are potentially dangerous, such as slippery or pitched roofs or other high places. Contractors can also work with parts of your home that you cant really afford to get wrong, such as gas lines and wiring.
Keep You From Getting Injured
Face it, the tools and materials people in the construction industry work with can be dangerous. Recovering from accidentally hammering your finger is easy, but what happens if you mishandle a power tool or hurt your back carrying in a sink? Some of the devices contractors use, like nail guns, can even be potentially lethal in the wrong hands.
Supply All the Tools and Materials
Obtaining all the materials for a construction or remodeling project is very time consuming, even when you know what to buy. A good contractor has the right tools for every situation, and knows where to go to get the best material at the best price. Plus, they have the vehicles to transport everything they need to a construction site.
Clean Up
Probably the least enjoyable part of remodeling or construction work is cleaning up afterwards. Professional remodeling or renovation projects almost always include taking away all debris and unused material from your home. Also, a good contractor will properly dispose of any hazardous chemicals and materials.
If you ultimately decide to not go the do-it-yourself route, choose a good, reputable contractor to ensure the best work and a maximum return on your home remodeling or renovation investment.
